Why You Should Replace Your Old Garage Door

Replace Your Old Garage Door Today!

It’s true. Garage doors last for a very long time. And that makes it even harder to see the signs, which indicate that it’s time for garage door replacement. Most people would think of replacing the door to upgrade the overall aesthetics of their home. And that’s a fact. Due to their size, the looks of the overhead door will either increase or degrade the value of a residence. But what’s most important is its functionality. With years comes decay and with decay comes problems, which in turn create gaps in your security, terrible inconveniences, and above all unsafe garages. And these are the main reasons why you should replace your old garage door, but not the only ones.

Garage door repair services prolong your overhead door’s lifespan

Most garage door parts are steel. As you probably know, this material erodes. Corrosion doesn’t happen overnight. But humidity and exposure to both rain and sun as well as years of use take their toll. Steel parts start wearing and their deterioration is even faster with lack of proper garage door repair. Let’s say one of the tracks does not have good alignment. Even if the rollers can still move, they will eventually scratch the surface of the tracks. When the surface of steel materials is scratch, corrosion is faster. That’s true for stainless steel too. If the protective layer has damage, the material will start wearing. That’s also why lubricants are necessary. If the tracks are not lubricated, the rollers will eventually have a hard time sliding up and down. This makes the door noisy and sets the grounds for material damage.

Garage doors rot, warp and rust over the years

Although we have established the importance of garage door repair services for the long-lasting of the door, there will come a time when the entire system will age. And you should get replacement for it. When you start spending more on garage door repair than before, you will know it’s time. After all, it’s not just parts which wear. The door wears too. It doesn’t simply loses its elegance, but it starts breaking down depending on the material. Wood garage doors warp at the edges and steel surfaces rust. You can deal with some damage by painting the door over the years, but at one point painting will not suffice.

Take advantage of the new garage door opener technology

When a garage door is rotten and its parts have damage, your security will be questioned and so will your safety. Can you trust an overhead door which makes an effort to open and hardly closes well? One of the most important reasons for new garage door installation is that there is a lot of progress in the industry. New materials are processed better and new doors can be insulated and are often made with safe features, like special hinges and pinch protection sections for the avoidance of injuries. And all pros at Dream Garage Door believe that this is one more excellent reason for replacing the door.

And how about the tremendous development of the technology of new openers? Manufacturers are required by federal law to make openers with safety sensors. They also include several features, which increase security. Who can say no to new garage doors and openers, which offer much, look good and make access a piece of cake? Certainly not you! 10 Safety Tips to Remember About Your Garage Door

Garages are definitely an ideal amenity to any home because they provide extra room for storage, a covering for keeping vehicles in better condition and can be turned into a space for home projects. However, garages tend to be less secure and safe than other areas of the house. In working with the Door and Access Systems Manufacturing Association (DASMA)  and the International Door Association (IDA), the Overhead Door Corporation created some garage door safety tips to keep in mind while entering and exiting your home:

      1. The garage door opener button should be out of a child’s reach.
      2. Never let kids play with the remote controls to garage doors.
      3. Educate yourself on how to use the door’s emergency release, usually found in the owner’s manual.
      4. Every month, examine the garage door. Check for signs of decay on the springs, pulleys, cables, or rollers. If any of these features look loose or worn out, it is best to call a professional garage door repairman to fix or repair the parts. Some garage doors have high tension springs that can badly injure someone who doesn’t know what they’re doing when messing with it.
      5. Also on your monthly check-up of it, test the opener’s reverse mechanism by placing an object like a board or box of where the door would come down. The door should reverse when it lands on the object. If it doesn’t, call a professional repairman or consider installing a new garage door with a standard auto-reverse feature.
      6. Don’t ever put fingers or toes in garage door sections or in the way of the operating mechanism. If there are small children in the house, consider getting a garage door with panels that prevents the door from nipping anyone.
      7. Never leave your house with the garage door partly open. When the door is in motion again it can either land on an object unexpectedly or lessen the security of your things in the garage or the home.
      8. If you are leaving town for a while, disconnect your garage door device. Most openers also come with a vacation lock, which can make the remote non-functional when activated.
      9. Try to find a garage door opener that has hopping-code technology, which constantly alters access codes to avert code snatching. For added security, be sure to change all access codes to the garage door’s opener and on the remote control right when you install the door. Or to go one step further, buy a newer garage door that has standard security features.
      10. More burglaries are happening by thieves getting access to a home by taking the garage door opener from the car. For this reason, don’t ever leave the opener in the vehicle or wherever anyone has easy access to it. An alternative option is to use a remote that fits on a key chain, especially if the garage door opener is linked to your car. Don’t forget to lock all of the doors to your house, too, especially the one in the garage. It may take a little extra time, but it’s worth it!

Garage Door Accident Demonstrates Importance of Professional Repairs

Garage Door Accident

A Tilehurst man injured his pinky finger on October 12 in a garage door accident. He was attempting to repair an automatic garage door mechanism. He was assisted by a neighbor who contacted the firefighters after hearing the man screaming for help from his Fairford Road home. He was later admitted into the Royal Berkshire Hospital for treatment.

The man, who is believed to be in his early 20s, was freed by rescue workers an hour after his finger was trapped in the spring mechanism. According to Watch Commander Luke Coleman, firefighters needed to disengage it first to remove the garage door.

The victim’s neighbor, who happened to a garage door repairman, played a crucial role in the rescue mission. He offered firefighters guidance on how to disconnect the spring mechanism and shut down the unit to remove the garage door safely.

In an interview with S & B Media, Coleman stated that the rescue team did not know how to free the victim. Thanks to the neighbor’s expertise, the man escaped with no further injuries.
Commander Coleman also gave a firm warning to citizens not to attempt garage repairs at home. Because garage doors can malfunction for many reasons, it is advisable to consult a professional to avoid injuries such as these and worse.

In this incident, a garage door repair specialist would have known to disconnect the spring mechanism and opener before making repairs. If people are to avoid injury, they should seek professional advice and assistance first.

It is highly recommended that if you are going to attempt any garage door repair tasks by yourself, to make sure that you are very careful and know what you’re doing. Better yet, play it safe and ask for professionals to handle the work for you. The risk of serious injuries is just never worth it!
